What does the term ‘4 colour process’  mean?

4 Colour images are made up of 4 colours – C – Cyan, M – Magenta, Y – Yellow, K – Key colour which is black. A K is used for black as historically, it was known as ‘keyline’. 4 colour process printing is achieved by laying down the 4 colours one after the other in a series of very small dots which combine visually to make up the image. The smaller the dot, the finer the image.

What is the difference between Litho printing and Digital printing?

There are a few key differences to be aware of. Firstly, Offset Litho involves setting up a printing plate to create the first copy whereas Digital does not require printing plates of any kind to be developed. This means that the process for producing printed materials with Offset Litho takes slightly longer than with Digital. Graphics and Print have invested in computer-to-plate technology that gives us a first generation image onto the plate, thereby providing customers with the highest quality possible. Secondly, depending on how many copies of a printed item are required, Litho can prove to be much cheaper than Digital. The rule of thumb is that for fewer than 500 printed items, Digital would prove slightly cheaper, but for print runs of 500 or more, Litho provides customers with the more cost-effective option.
Finally, Litho offers by far the better quality of print. Whilst both print options offer ‘full colour’ processes to create different colours, Offset Litho is the only option which allows for the use of dedicated ‘spot’ colours. This means they offer a higher degree of accuracy in terms of the colour you want. It also means that colours such metallic silver & gold - or even fluorescent inks - can be applied.

Is print necessary in this modern age? Why don’t I just use the internet to communicate my messages?

There’s no doubt that over the last 20 years, more and more information is being communicated through the web rather than print but if you ask most internal communications teams within SMEs and large corporate companies, they will tell you that print still has an extremely important role to play within the communications process.  With colleagues and customers having fewer hours in a working day, many people still prefer to receive a printed item delivered directly to them, rather than searching on the net and reading from a screen. Many people who travel to and from work use this time to read printed materials and catch up on those important messages that they would otherwise not have time to read.  Many internal communications teams will also tell you that print is being ever increasingly used to sign post people to more detailed information. It is also being used to really heighten awareness of forthcoming important issues/announcements. Finally, most communications experts will tell you that print, when used in combination with other communications media, is probably the most powerful way of delivering messages. There’s no doubt that there are individuals who are happy to read everything from a screen but likewise, there are an equal number of people who still prefer to receive the printed item. It’s for that reason that print still has a vital role to play within communications.
